Los Chachas Handicrafts Group and Celebrate Planet Earth
Our ancestral handcrafts association “Las Chachas” was born on June 18, 2008, in the Andean city of Chachapoyas, when twelve Peruvian women united with a single purpose: to rescue and share our knowledge through handicrafts. Despite many challenges over those years, in 2014, we began producing thousands of butterfly and bee finger puppets for Celebrate Planet Earth.
We then began teaching handicraft workshops in conservation areas to 6,000 rural women in the Amazon, Cajamarca, La Libertad and Awajun regions of Peru. Some of the Awajun women travelled for three days by car, canoe, and walking, in order to join the handcrafts group.
Our collaboration with Celebrate Planet Earth became the most popular project to promote community involvement in conservation. This project has been a great help to our families, allowing us to contribute to our household income and opening doors of friendship to learn more about ancestral handcraft traditions. This work supported by Celebrate Planet Earth contributed to women’s participation in the creation of thousands of acres of conservation areas across northern Peru.
Today, we continue moving forward. We are seven partners who have resisted many difficulties over decades, but we continue knitting and weaving, convinced that our work and knowledge will continue to live on. We hope to make the lives of school children better with our finger puppets, and we are grateful for Celebrate Planet Earth and all who purchase our handicrafts.
Grupo de Artesanas Las Chachas y Celebrate Planet Earth
Nuestra asociación de artesanas ancestrales “Las Chachas” nació el 18 de junio de 2008 en la ciudad andina de Chachapoyas, cuando doce mujeres peruanas se unieron con un solo propósito: rescatar y compartir nuestros conocimientos a través de la artesanía. A pesar de los muchos desafíos a lo largo de estos años, en 2014 comenzamos a producir miles de títeres de dedo de mariposas y abejas para Celebrate Planet Earth.
Luego, comenzamos a impartir talleres de artesanía en áreas de conservación a 6000 mujeres rurales en las regiones de la Amazonía, Cajamarca, La Libertad y Awajún en Perú. Algunas de las mujeres Awajún viajaron durante tres días en coche, canoa y a pie para unirse al grupo de artesanas.
Nuestra colaboración con Celebrate Planet Earth se convirtió en el proyecto más popular para promover la participación comunitaria en la conservación. Este proyecto ha sido de gran ayuda para nuestras familias, permitiéndonos contribuir a los ingresos del hogar y abriendo puertas de amistad para aprender más sobre las tradiciones artesanales ancestrales. Este trabajo, apoyado por Celebrate Planet Earth, contribuyó a la participación de las mujeres en la creación de miles de hectáreas de áreas de conservación en el norte de Perú.
Hoy, seguimos adelante. Somos siete socias que hemos resistido muchas dificultades a lo largo de décadas, pero seguimos tejiendo y bordando, convencidas de que nuestro trabajo y conocimiento perdurarán. Esperamos mejorar la vida de los escolares con nuestros títeres de dedo, y estamos agradecidas con Celebrate Planet Earth y con todos los que compran nuestras artesanías.
