How to Help Birds in Winter!

How to Help Birds in Winter!

It is cold and snowy in most of the US! Time to bundle up and keep warm. Children might wonder what they can do to help wild animals like birds survive out in the cold. It’s a wonderful way to show how you love the Earth and all its creatures.

How to Help Birds in Winter:

  1. Put out bird food in a sheltered place.
  2. Birds need water to drink too.
  3. Leave warm nesting materials where birds can find them.

Butterfly & Sunflower Classrooms Sponsored by International Paper in 2023

Butterfly & Sunflower Classrooms Sponsored by International Paper in 2023

In spring of 2023, 100 International Paper facilities in 30 US states are sponsoring more than 5,000 classrooms to receive our Butterflies & Sunflowers Classroom Kit. Observing live caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies and planting sunflower seeds that grow into glorious sunflowers is an amazing learning experience for early elementary students. Caring for the natural world plants a seed to love and protect the Earth, our home, throughout their lives. Celebrate Planet Earth is proud to partner with International Paper over many years. @InternationalPaper

Butterflies at Blackwater Regional Library

Butterflies at Blackwater Regional Library

We just got these amazing photos from a Butterfly Project at Blackwater Regional Library in Virginia. Libraries are an wonderful resource for many, many children. It would be great to come to the library, observe the caterpillars and butterflies, and check out one of the children’s books about butterflies.

Donate to Help NM Classrooms

It is more critical than ever to help New Mexico’s students connect to learning in a meaningful way. A $50 donation is enough to provide both butterfly & sunflower kits for one classroom as well as bilingual nature libraries for every student to bring home and share with their families. Through our butterfly and sunflower classroom programs, we engage students as early as kindergarten with exciting hands-on activities, setting them up for a lifetime of critical thinking and engagement with the world around them. This holiday season, help us water the seeds of literacy and share the delight of the natural world with more New Mexico students. Please visit CelebratePlanetEarth.org to donate today.

Disinfectants & Butterflies in the Classroom

Disinfectants & Butterflies in the Classroom

Just as you want to protect your skin from harsh disinfectants, so it’s important to protect delicate caterpillars and
butterflies from airborne chemicals and surface residues.

Here are some RECOMMENDATIONS to protect your insects and other classroom pets from harm:

COVER the caterpillar cups or butterfly house with a large box or plastic container – whenever disinfectants are being used in
the classroom, cover your insects to protect them from sprays and harsh chemicals.

COVER OVERNIGHT – it’s best to use a breathable fabric like a pillowcase if cleaning takes place in the evening.

MOVE the caterpillar cups or butterfly house to a cupboard or storage closet to minimize the impact of cleaning procedures.

Community Engagement, International Paper 2021

Community Engagement, International Paper 2021

Celebrate Planet Earth is delighted to be working with International Paper through its Community Engagement Program. In March, April & May, we’ll be sending more than 4500 Butterfly & Sunflower Classroom Kits to elementary schools in 26 states. Many children will be observing butterfly metamorphosis for the very first time. They will learn the body parts of insects, record data of the 4 life stages, and read stories about the life cycle of butterflies.
